This should be a really embarassing mistake for people who insist that Arizona's timezones are confusing.īecause people so consistently make this error, google represents MST as MDT, since that's what most of the country is actually trying to ask. That would be 12:00 MST, but California is on PDT in the summer so they actually want to meet at 11:00 MST but they've incorrectly communicated this. For example, trying to schedule something with coworkers from San Francisco will have them sending me an email asking if "July 25th, 11:00am PST" will work. The reason google gets this confused is because people from these timezones will erroneously refer to PDT as PST, etc. It won't show you PST, it will show you PDT. I believe the same thing happens if you google "current PST" or "current EST" in the summer.

Yes, google gets this wrong, and it's frustrating. But because Arizona is being Arizona, that isn't universally true and it is necessary to specify. When people refer to Mountain Time Zone, (or just Mountain time) they are implicitly thinking that the standard/daylight switch happens. Similarly California switches between Pacific Daylight and Pacific Standard time in the spring and fall. So for example, Colorado is currently in Mountain Daylight Time and in November will switch to Mountain Standard Time. All the other US states switch between Daylight Savings Time and Standard Time. If I suspect there will be confusion, I reframe the question in terms of "California time" or "Colorado Time".Īrizona follows Mountain Standard Time the whole year. Unfortunately I've encountered many people that use MST to mean just Mountain with maybe daylight savings. Instead Mountain Standard Time is defined as an offset from GMT and it doesn't change over the year for daylight savings time. The problem is that Mountain Standard Time does *not* mean "The time that most states in the Mountain Time Zone think it is".
